I don’t have any sketches today sorry. I thought it might be neat to see what a couple of the recent comics looked like minus the word balloons. I thought both of these had some cool stuff that just ended up getting covered up.

Why doesn't Gabe have some wine too?

Really cool; I stared at part two for a long time at PA so when I saw it here I had to stare at it twise as long :p

I really like how it is reminiscent of The Last Supper; it's a great way of putting all the characters at the table without anyone having to give their backs to their viewer.

Damn that Tycho and his wordsmithery, always trying to cover over your masterpieces.
You and I both know he's just jealous.

The one on the top makes a killer PSP wallpaper.
Good stuffs.

This is fantastic, sir. You should seriously put up every comic without word balloons from now on--or at least the strips that are pretty significantly covered up. The background work in the top comic is worth showing off.

In the Last Supper comic, it looks like the Jesus on the wall is giving a thumbs up.

Nice touch.

Were the numbers on the clock, in the top comic, from a font or were those hand-made?

Just curious as I was wondering what font is, if indeed it is a font.

Hah. I noticed that all of Tycho's wine is gone there.

Nobody's asked for a desktop yet, I'm surprised. Mostly I have all the same, glowing things to say about your 'Last Supper' panel. You actually don't loose hardly anything in the comic with the absence of text (I think I just heard Tycho twitch!). Sure the shit-phallus was a funny joke and all, but all the tone is set by the image itself.

Can I ask why you have decided to take away Annarchy's chin and cheekbones? She looks strange now, since we're used to the character drawn the other way.

Gabriel said...

I changed ann a bit just becasue I wanted her to look younger. The girls in the strip always change. I'm just never happy with the way they look for some reason.

Man that top one would make an AMAZING desktop. if you know what I'm saying. eh? eh???

great art as always :)

Haha, I like how Gabe, being the childish character he is, has milk instead of wine, and Tyco's is all gone.

Feeple said...

I just want to say that I've been a long time fan of yours, Gabe. And that I indetify with Tycho's situation (in terms of family) far too much.

hah, kickass work on the dinner one. stuff like that reminds me of my dreams of working on an amusing web comic, before my crappy art skills and inability to write jokes kick it in the junk.

Anonymous said...

I blew up part 2 into a nice desktop background. Love ya work.

Anonymous said...

That dinner table one is particularly awesome. Like someone mentioned, it's very 'Last Supper'. Add some black bars above and below and you'd have an excellent wallpaper indeed.

Also, I'm loving the colour. That's one thing that's really been improving in PA, the colour palettes, the backgrounds, etc. Very pleasing on the eyes, very moodful... If that's a word. Kicks the crap out of other comics.

Anonymous said...

Part 2 looks like a twisted version of the last supper. you guys should come out with a book without the bubbles. that'd be sweet.

Anonymous said...

Great last supper nod!

I love the episodic comics, the two and three parters. It's too bad that the christian overload impression was obscured by the word balloons, but not much you can do for it.

I love Annarchy, the seed of coolness in an otherwise stifling household. And adorable, too!

The family resemblance between Tycho/Ann/Tycho's Brother is pretty amusing too. I'm not sure which apple fell farther from the tree, Tycho or his brother. It's hard to tell who's more successful, and Annarchy is a lot more like Tycho than her father, so you could argue that it's the brother who is the black sheep of the family.

A friend linked this achewood comic to me, and for some reason I immediately thought about your sketches.

What dark and disturbing images appear in your sketchbook, Gabe?

Anonymous said...

Just wanted to put 2 cents in. Maybe you have heard it before, but it might be a good idea to use 50% transparency with the text bubbles on the cells with alot of background art. Just the bubbles, not the text, because I dont see the text doing more then slightly obscuring the background art. That and Tycho will still get his valuable words in! j/k

It's true the females in Penny-Arcade tend to change in design when compared to the males more frequently. Look at Kara and Brenna, who, whenever they do manage to make an appearance, tend to differ in design nearly every time they are drawn. I like that, though, those more drastic changes and hints of experimenting styles make the artwork intriguing.

I'd like to see more females in Penny-Arcade. Whenever business types, or non-Gabe-and-Tycho-gamers are shown, they are always guys. The girls tend to be cashiers and wives and girlfriends, and seeing stores and families in PA comics is rare enough alone. Judging from the growing female demographic in video games (that will continue to do so, I should suspect, thanks to the Wii), I'm sure they would appreciate getting a nod every so often. I should know, my best friend is a gamer girl. I mean, Annarchy's age and gender make her personality all the more endearing, right?

Truth is, though, the female form is simply a design seldom found in PA strips, but tend to be artistically striking (and not because they're, you know, female but because they're something new). Then again, that is perhaps due to the rarity of female appearances in the strip.

Even so, it's always nice to see things outside the norm when it comes to the artwork.

I wanted to make a suggestion regarding the naming of Ann's father/Tycho's brother. Give him an embarrassing nickname. The asshole uncle is always made better by a silly moniker.(My family calls our big-mouthed black sheep "Gaston" since his ultra-cocky antics mimic the 'Beauty and the Beast' character.)

The route of Tycho's brother's surly attitude could be rooted in this hypothetical childhood inferiority complex and jealousy at Tycho and Gabe's seemingly-effortless life success.

Then again, this might be too much of that dreaded continuity so feel free to completely drill this comment out of your skull via powertool a la the movie 'Pi'.

The cups on the table. Is it just me, or are they the same basic design? What I mean is, from left to right, it goes (winecup)-(milkcup)-(winecup). And then the pattern repeats, and it looks as if the distances between the first three are the same as the second three.

I love how the grandma is just sitting there smiling. Probably thinking about her 'man candy'. XP If i was Tycho, it wouldn't be an empty wine glass, it's be an empty BOTTLE. I love how the characters are all in bright colors, which contrasts with the more subtle colors of the background and foreground. It really draws your attention to them and their expressions. I always loved the way you drew facial expressions.
JESUS IS F'ING METAL!!! XD

Thank you for posting this. I'm always interested in these little glimpses from behind the scenes.

And I agree with Kyle. I like seeing Anarchy in the PA strips, precicely because she's the only female gamer we ever see, and I want someone I can identify with. Ditto for Charles, who I like because he uses Mac.

In fact, Gabe, would it be possible for you and Tycho to make Charles get a sex change, so he would be both a Mac geek AND a girl? Then I would have a character I could identify with even more. Even better, he could get plastic surgery, dye his hair brown, and change his name to my name. I think that would maximize my ability to identify with your comic strip, because I often find myself rating my enjoyment of webcomics based solely around how much their characters resemble me. This is why I'm such an avid reader of Dr. McNinja.

Penny Arcade without words is probably the most surreal, wonderful think I've seen today.

It's eerily funny.

Anonymous said...

It'd be great if you could make another video, but instead of inking or coloring, could you show us your sketching process. I'd love to see how you setup your frame and apply the shapes from start to finish.
ALSO... PLEASE bring back the oldsketch dump, those sketches were the best reference for how you formed your action poses.

really nice.

Amazing. I love the artwork of your comics, so nice to see them without bubbles.
The wineglass issue is great, poor Tycho ;-)
I also agree, this would make a great wallpaper!

I'd have liked to see Jesus throwing up the horns in that picture. Now that would have been awesome! :)

Hi Gabriel

I’m an Italian guy from Milan.. what else.. my name is Gabriele (Italian version of Gabriel) and my zodiac sign is libra again, just like you.. let’s call it a coincidence!

I have a blog of my own, http://leluz-leluz.blogspot.com/ and while surfing the net I bumped into your site discovering your world of illustration, which I really appreciated !

So, I just wanted to congratulate with you and your magnificent work

I just gotta say that Tycho's sister-in-law is hot. That's all.

I find it interesting that you run into problems with cool parts of your drawings getting covered up by wordbubbles. A shame, yes, but an interesting shame. When I do comics, I typically try to account for wordbubble space in laying out each frame. It's kind of cool to see that someone does it differently and is willing to draw little extra background things that the readers may not end up seeing. And it's also cool to see the extra backgroundy things shown here! Thanks for sharing the pre-wordbubble strips.

I think that you should post part three without the speech balloons. That would be hilarious. Just Gabe looking at the poster, and then Granny just starts making out with it.

Funny stuff.

In the 2nd panel of the 2nd comic...

Does anyone else notice the subliminal knife image under Annarchy's belt-buckle?

Yeah, yeah, I know it's just a weird coincidence or something, but it's a strange thing to find in a PA cartoon (I didn't notice it until I saw the word-bubble-less version).

Regardless, the Thanksgiving comic trilogy was hilarious.

Any chance of getting a 'last supper' wallpaper?

Awesome as always, sir. Love Jesus giving the thumbs up, though i must say i was a little disappointed he wasn't throwing the horns.

I guess the Lord and Savior can't throw the horns all the time. That's what "The Crow" taught us. ...I think.

Granny seems pretty damn content, maybe even pissing herself.

Also funny to see who Tycho gets his square jaw from.
