Another Link warm up sketch this morning. His face came out kind of wonky but I still like it.

I like it! the design is slightly simplified but it holds up and I like the expression. The wonkyness of the face happens because the eyes aren't properly aligned all the way, but if you inked it that would probably fix itself. Another thing I noticed is that the shoulders are really inclined, but you forgot to compensate when you drew the arms (his right arm should hang a lot lower than it is now)

I did a really quick sketchover for what I meant (eyes and arms), hope you don't mind :) : http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v139/XavierGarcia/gabe_link.jpg

But yeah, this is a warm up sketch, so I'm probably going overboard, sorry about that. Great stuff!

Damn, link didn't fit, if you triple click on the link you'll select the whole text and then you can copy > paste.

Apologies for the trouble

By "wonky" I'm sure you mean his face looks slightly more masculine than Link has ever looked. ;) I like the sketch though.

(oh and nice Blogger theme.. ;) )

I noticed you made him the right handed Link from TP. I’m assuming since you’ve been playing the new one that was what you were going for.

Yeah his nose and mouth are a tad off, but it's not a big deal. Plan on coloring this one? Perhaps using the same color scheme as TP, or going with a more vibrant palette?

I don't mean to nit-pick, and maybe it's cause I'm reading something wrong in the picture, but it kind of looks like he's got a big gut.

This is pretty good; I don't care much for the blade on his sword; but everything else seems fine (You already know about the face).

I really like all the details you placed in the background; they really complete the image.

sweet. Stumbled across this blog from the art blog category. Very cool to see your process.

I have to say, I've never actually seen Link in normal enviroments doing semi-normal things. But this lumberjack link has touched me!

Anonymous said...

I quite like it, sir. To me it's like Link walked over to the 100 Acre woods for a small helping of honey. Anyway, killer as always, thanks for sharing.

Why are you so flipping amazing?

Anonymous said...

Nice... I wish my regular sketches looked like your warm-up ones! Link Rocks!

I still think you should consider putting out a digital Gabeart/Penny-Arcade colouring book of your "inked" artwork, that would be awesome.

This is incredibly nit-picky and the only reason I noticed it is because I have a habit of doing it when I draw. With the exception of the book cover, all the characters you've posted are facing left. It's a comfort thing but that can come back to haunt you.

That point aside, your stuff is awesome. Post more. Post! *shaking fist*

stu, thats just because hes standing with his pelvis kind of jutted out...if you follow the implied line behind the shield its pretty obvious he's the same ol' skinny link we all know and love.
great job Gabe.

Awesome art, man. What type of inks would you recommend for some n00b getting into the comic work?

Ky said...

While I love the picture, I think the shield could be a little bigger, judging by the size of the sword (exaggerated, I'm sure). Also, the positioning of the legs in comparison to one another looks somewhat awkward. The pose is great, the shoulders might be slightly misaligned, but Link looks much more epic and badass than they make him out in Twilight Princess. I'm really digging the sketches and linearts above and beyond even the finished versions, man, so keep it up.

I think the face is fine (especially compared to mine, although for me I can never get his hat and hair to look right). What I thought looked a little weird though was that he seems to be leaning foward, stomach first. Other then that awesome sketch, and I still can't believe you can do Link that weel as a quick sketch.

Love it. Very nice.
Great line of action, too. I'm also a sucker for shaggy hair. :D
Stupid question - have you ever considered animation?

While I love link as much as the next guy...

I hear you like Guilty Gear!Sadley, I have seen no (save for a single frame) art to back up such theories. Art that you have done, that is.

I'd love to see a Sol, but Ky would probobly be a better for your style.

You don't mind if we color these for practice, do you?

If I was an artist I would never turn comments on in my blog.

People are so critical -- itss a warmup!

Bunch of stupid questons for you...

Are your warmup sketches done on paper, or at they done on a computer with a tablet?
Also, if it was done on paper, did you draw him in red ink?/pencil? Or was he changed to red on the computer?

Thanks.

Great stuff mate. Everyone seems to be critiquing your work to the nth degree. Sort of odd since it's only a warmup. For the most part I think it's the little oddities that give character and an individual style to a drawing but hey i'm lucky to draw a stick figure well so what do i know :).

Robin said...

Yeah, I have to agree with the previous comments. It looks like he just found the fruit fucker in bed with Zelda. Possibly not for the first time and he's trying to decide appropriate vengeance.

I think the face is really neat looking! It adds a bit of mystery to Link's face.

Anonymous said...

I like it. i dont think there's anything wrong with his face.

Anonymous said...

Link has a manly goatee :D

Awesome sketch though, nice job.
A question, roughly how long does it take you to draw one of these sketches?

Ty said...

I really like how it looks like he's facing into the wind, about to F something up. Great warm-up sketch.

Risingred said...

I quite like this one as well. One of the few images of Link that has him slightly feminine, but not "moving-to-San-Francisco" feminine.

FDisk said...

Gabe,

Completely unrelated to this drawing but the art in today's comic is the best I've seen you do in a while. I stared at it for a long time; the texture on the back wall was really well done, as was the 360 box and the rain in the last panel. Top job, sir.

So cool.

I would love to see this coloured. :) I can see how you think it's wonky, but it's most definitely recognizable and Link is one of those characters I've always just wanted to see drawn in your style. XD Just do Spyro the Dragon, Yoshi, and Midna next, and I think that list is complete.

awesome sketch would love to see it colored and prettied up

That's pretty awesome, I'm in an Illustrator class at the mo', and I figured I could use the practice, so I Inked it, It's not exactly in your style, and I cant get some parts exactly right, but I figured I'd show it to you all the same. After the Illustrator practice, i'm gonna try and just straight out ink it with my tablet.

Well Here it is
here

yay, my html works!!

Remember, L for Link, L for left-handed.

Right for right-handed, R for... aRan. Samus... aRan.

Well. There's no L in Samus Aran.

I don't know if you're aware of the old Metroid comics, but perhaps this pic will interest you as much as it did me (left page).

Go here for an even better Samus comic. I did not draw this one. I swear.

Anonymous said...

Everyone is "nitpicking", but no one noticed that the sheath and harness should be switched for his right-handedness.

Anonymous said...

I love the sketch. I'd really like to see a desktop pattern or even a poster along these same lines.

Anonymous said...

I think this sketch is amazing. If i had to pick one thing wrong its that Link is left handed and you got the sword in the right hand. But thats a retarded complaint since they put it in his right hand for the Wii version cuz they thought it might confuse the right handed people. I still play left handed tho :D
