I need to get the cover for our fourth book done today and I thought I might let you guys watch the process. The title for the book is “Birds are Weird” and this is the sketch I came up with last night. I scanned it in this morning and my next step will be to ink it. Once that’s done I’ll pass it over to Kiko to design a logo for the title and I’ll work on the colors. I’ll keep posting updates during the day.

I've absolutely adored all the covers you've created so far, but this design doesn't look so visually interesting. Like, it's missing something dynamic in the layout.

When I think about weird birds, I think about a bird staring at me with one insane eye, up close. A crazed chicken, or flock of chickens.

Anyway, I'd buy a Penny Arcade book with nothing but a picture of a sandwich on it, but I just felt like sharing this horrible opinion.

The store should really sell prints of some of this stuff... I'd buy it

How come the character Gabe has such a look in his eyes? It is almost like he is throwing eye daggers at the bird.

Anyways, I can't wait to see the process of sketch to final product. Thanks for sharing!

Neat sketch, its a nice departure from the other covers in that it seems a bit more serene and the layout works nicely as well in the fact that it draws attention TO the bird, so great job on that aspect. It reminds me of some Calvin and Hobbes covers, thats always a good thing. Looking forward to see what mood you set with the colors!

So it looks like this was done in pencil...

How much of your work is done completely on the computer, and how much is scanned before inking?

yeah I really wanted this cover to be a departure from the others. I wanted something with a lot of negative space, something really simple and almost classy.

I agree about the inking and coloring. I'm seeing very musted tones on Gabe and Tycho and then something more vibrant on the bird to make him really pop.

Hey, just wanted to say I love the stuff you post on Gabeart, glad you're putting links on the PA site. Although there is a dark underbelly I've noticed. The music you put to the video of you colouring Bulba Fet was stuck in my head all day today. People were wondering why I was claiming to be a P-I-M-P.

Also, not that I think you should take requests or anything... but, I'm a huge comicbook geek, any chances you'll doodle any Gabe-ified superheroes and post them?

Is it just me or is Tycho's right leg a litte bit longer than his left? Oh well. Fantastic sketch, otherwise, I like how I immediately followed the other characters' eyes to the bird.
