Same here when it comes to learning. I am tapping at my first real acrylic project (Dirk the Daring from Dragon's Lair) and it is a whole new world. Blending, brush pressure, etc. New, intimidating, and fun as hell.
An interesting medium you might want to try a little further down the line are fluid acrylics. They're a lot more, well, fluid than your average acrylic and take to water a lot like watercolor (providing you use copious amounts of water as I do). You can go thick and do most anything a normal acrylic might, or you can go thin and you'll get something more like this http://jakeekiss.deviantart.com/art/Meditations-65818838
Just something to play with. It'll give you a lot of the watery play and spontaneity of watercolor with a drying time and pigment quality that's a little more like acrylic. Very cool stuff.
